The 79th annual Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, took place on Sunday but did not feature the traditional audience or red carpet due to COVID-19 concerns, presumably combatted with ongoing controversy over a lack of diversity at the awards show which led to the discontinuation of NBC’s broadcast, according to CNN. Still, the awards were announced on the show’s website and social media pages.
“Health and safety remain a top priority for the HFPA,” the HFPA said in a statement Tuesday, via CNN. “There will not be an audience on January 9th, and the following precautions are being taken for select members and grantees who will be in the room: Proof of vaccination and booster shot, along with a negative PCR test within 48 hours, is required for entry; All guests will be masked and socially distanced at all times while inside the ballroom; There will be no red carpet.”
The organization also added in the same statement that they have made changes in favor of diversity and inclusion practices to address disparities in its voting.
“Over the last eight months, the HFPA has completely overhauled their bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership and more,” it said, via CNN. Recently, the HFPA admitted their largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.”
Nominations for the show were announced in December, with HBO’s Succession leading television nominations at five, and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and The Morning Show following with four nominations each.
Succession had an overall successful run, with Jeremy Strong (The Gentlemen) taking home the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Television Drama Series and Sarah Snook (Jessabelle) winning the Golden Globe for the Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series. Meanwhile, Jason Sudeikis (We’re The Millers) earned the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series for his role in Ted Lasso. HBO’s Hacks was also awarded for its debut season, having won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series and Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series for lead Jean Smart (Designing Women).
