Gina Rodriguez Confirmed for ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Reboot

Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? For children born after 2000, this question may be met with some blank looks or shrugging shoulders. To the rest of us, we think back to hours upon hours of the computer game franchise that we played on technology most people shudder to remember.

The video game featured the character Carmen Sandiego, with her iconic red fedora and trench coat, who the audience was instructed to find so that she could answer for her crimes (namely, thievery). The game was mainly a clever way to teach children about geography, and even morphed into a somewhat popular live-action show on PBS from 1991 to 1996.

Now the world of Carmen Sandiego is expanding. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Gina Rodriguez has been cast as the ruby-wearing thief in the new Netflix reboot. In the new series, Carmen Sandiego will delve into her personal history, answering the questions of why and how she became a talented thief.

Gina Rodriguez is most commonly known for her role on Jane the Virgin on CW (she’s even earned a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Jane Villanueva). In a touching twist, Rodriguez says that Rita Moreno, the actress who voiced Carmen Sandiego on the animated series from 1994 to 1999, was actually an idol of hers. Now she’ll be able to follow in her footsteps and create a new version of a once-beloved children series.
