The Residence, a series to premiere on Netflix has restarted production. Due to the hiatus, it took during the WGA strikes in 2023, the project has been delayed several times. But now, it is back and cameras are rolling. In the series, late actor Andre Braugher (Brooklyn 99) played a leading role. His sudden passing meant that someone needed to take over for him. Deadline has now announced that Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) will succeed Brother in the new series.
Esposito has treated this opportunity with the utmost respect. According to Deadline, he states that he feels both “proud” and “honored” to step into his role. He states, “I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s The Residence for someone that I loved and respected and cherished in Andre Braugher,” said Esposito. “To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honor with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly.”
Production was supposed to begin January 2 but when Braugher suddenly passed on December 12, the project was put on pause to give the cast some time to breathe and to mourn the loss of their friend and co-star. The project was also taking a time-out so that a new plan could be created for how the show was going to continue and who exactly was going to fill in for Braugher.
The Residence is based on the book by Kate Andersen Brower titled, Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. The series is officially described by Netflix as “a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion. After a dead body is found, one wildly eccentric detective (Aduba) comes in to investigate 157 suspects attending a state dinner.”
The Residence will be streaming on Netflix. There is yet to be an official release date released to the public.
