According to Variety, Gayle King is expected to take a step back from her position as anchor next year. She has been an integral part of CBS’s morning show for over a decade. There is a possibility, however, that King may transition to another news division that is overseen by the Paramount Skydance regime.
Variety says that in May, King’s contract is set to expire. Based on the signs left, CBS would prefer to keep King on its staff. There may be a chance that King will produce her own program with the company. Norah O’Donnell had a similar situation where she departed from her position and became a senior correspondent for CBS, becoming instrumental in the coverage of a multitude of programs.
Negotiations are inevitable with Paramount cutting ties with a large number of their staff at CBS. Plenty more layoffs are to take place across the company. King is not the first of the top CBS performers to pursue a different path, as the ownership of the company shifts from the Redstone Family to the Ellisons. The Ellison family expresses their plans to shift CBS away from the content that tilts them towards liberalism. Bari Weiss, a media mogul who founded the right-leaning opinion site The Free Press, was given the title of editor-in-chief of CBS earlier this month. King’s role in the company is of great importance to Weiss.
Variety has requested a comment from King regarding her future at CBS Mornings. A spokesperson responded, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.” There were also requests for a response from King’s attorney, to no avail.
The Ellisons tightened the reins for Paramount, so CBS has to move some things around. Their late-night programs went through a rocky patch, with Stephen Colbert’s show being on a hiatus and parting ways with John Dickerson, one of the anchors of CBS Evening News, according to Variety.
King has accomplished much during her time as a CBS anchor. Variety mentions she interviewed R. Kelly (12 Play, The Chocolate Factory) in 2019, which was handled with poise and dignity, as she was shouted at by the visibly frustrated singer, denying his sexual assault charges. King also traveled to space earlier this year alongside Katy Perry (Teenage Dream, Prism).
