As a part of WarnerMedia’s mission to expand the Game of Thrones universe since its conclusion in 2019, they have announced several spinoff series that are expected to debut within the coming years, according to Variety. These series include show based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, which was announced just last week, a live-action prequel series entitled House of Dragon which is slated to premiere in 2022, and an animated Game of Thrones series which is still in early development stages at HBO Max with cast and writers still yet to be announced.
Having premiered in 2011, the drama followed two powerful families attempting to gain control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and gain access to the throne. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The acclaimed series concluded in 2019 with its infamous eighth season but has since gained recognition via online and in-person games, spinoffs, and merchandise.
Tales of Dunk and Egg, will follow “the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, which served as the basis for Game of Thrones,” via Variety. Even further, the network will simultaneously be working on the aforementioned live action Game of Thrones prequel entitled House of Dragon, which will present the buildup to the Targaryen civil war which is known as the Dance of Dragons. Because the latter animated series is slated to premiere at HBO Max rather than HBO proper, WarnerMedia seemingly intends to “turn Game of Thrones into major media franchise across multiple platforms,” as examined by Variety.
Alongside a series of Game of Thrones spinoffs, the network is also developing more series based on their mothership series or films, including a live-action Harry Potter series at HBO Max and multiple other DC Comics shows, including a spinoff of the upcoming James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) Suicide Squad film entitled Peacemaker and a Green Lantern series from Greg Berlanti (Supergirl). Despite this, a priority of the network seems to be maintaining the Game of Thrones universe and fans can expect more content from the franchise in the coming years.
