Michelle Fairley, who is perhaps best known for her role as Catelyn Stark on Game of Thrones, is trading in one role as a mother of a throne-seeking child for another.
TVGuid.com reports that Fairley has been cast in Starz’ upcoming project, The White Princess. The White Princess is a follow up series to The White Queen which aired in 2013.
The White Queen and The White Princess are based on Philippa Gregory’s historical novel series The Cousins’ War. The White Queen followed the story of The War of The Roses, and no, I’m not talking about the 1989 Danny DeVito feature film. The War of The Roses lasted for 30 years between 1455-1485 and was a battle between the members of the English House of York and the House of Lancaster (almost like a real life Game of Thrones). The “Roses” part refers to the white rose symbolizing the House of York and the red rose representing the House of Lancaster. The end of the War of The Roses resulted in the union of both houses and the beginning of the Tudor era with Henry VII as king.
In The White Princess, Fairley will play Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII. Jodie Comer will play Elizabeth of York (presumably the “White Princess” from the title) who is destined to marry Henry. The union between Elizabeth and Henry and their two houses initiates tension between the princess and her future mother-in-law (Fairley). It’s a drama full of intrigue as Margaret’s past sins come to light and she begins to lose her influence over her son.
In Game of Thrones terms, Fairley will play the Cersei character in the limited series.
Fairley’s run on Game of Thrones ended in the horrifying event we will forever have branded in our minds, the Red Wedding. In Game of Thrones we counted on Catelyn Stark to be a strong mother who would do just about anything to guarantee her children’s survival. It sounds like Fairley will be playing a much more cut-throat character in The White Princess.
Emma Frost, who served as the writer for The White Queen will return as the showrunner for The White Princess. Frost will executive produce alongside Colin Callender (The White Queen), Michelle Buck, and Scott Huff.
Production for The White Princess is set to begin this year in England.
