‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘House of the Dragon’ is Underway

Game of Thrones fans may be excited to hear that there is a prequel series in the works called House of the Dragon, according to TV Guide. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Variety with uncertainty that the first season may be released as early as 2022 with ten episodes total.

House of the Dragon expands on George R.R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire which was made famous by the HBO mainstream success Game of Thrones. The spinoff focuses on the novel Fire & Blood in particular. Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this project will cover the Doom of Valyria and the Dance of Dragons while focusing on the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros. More exquisite visuals of dragons, raging kings, and betrayals are set to deliver with this anticipated show.

The series was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony). Condal joins Miguel Sapochnik (Repo Men) as a showrunner. Sapochnik has also directed some pivotal Game of Thrones episodes and will also manage many episodes of the spinoff. Previous Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss will not be involved the production of the new show.

Martin has announced that he won’t be scripting any episodes of the show until he completes his next installment of his A Song of Ice and Fire series, Winds of Winter. In post on his blog, he writes, “I expect to be involved in all of this to some extent… and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of Game of Thrones. But… let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered Winds of Winter. Winter is still coming, and Winds remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episode of House.”

Fans will be waiting a while for the release of the show. There is no official release date and no cast attached to the series just yet, but more information will likely be released after Hollywood slowly opens up and recovers from critical pandemic circumstances.
