Deadline reports that the television spin-off series The Purge has found its leading actors. Gabriel Chavarria (Lowriders, East Los High) and Jessica Garza (Six, A.P. Bio) have been cast to play the main characters in the upcoming television series, which will be based on The Purge film franchise.
Films of The Purge franchise are set in a dystopian future where the government has created “Purge Night”, a 12-hour window in which all crimes are declared legal. The first film, The Purge, was made in 2013 and starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. It inspired three more films, The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and the upcoming prequel film, The First Purge.
In the television spin-off made for USA and Syfy, Chavarria will take on the role of Miguel, a tough and capable US Marine. Garza will play his younger sister, Penelope.
The spin-off will focus on Miguel’s return to his hometown on Purge Night after receiving a mysterious message from Penelope. In order to track her down, he’ll need to wade his way through the violence and mayhem of the Purge.
The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco is a producer on the series. DeMonaco plans to release the television series alongside the franchise’s next film, The First Purge, which is set to premiere this summer.
