Created by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, Men in Black 3), What We Do in the Shadows first premiered in March 2019. The FX comedy can be streamed on Hulu and is filmed in documentary style. The fifth season is set to premiere on July 13th. With the season premiere in less than a month, the trailer has been released. According to Indiewire, the fifth season follows up on the cliffhanger ending of the previous season.
The series is based on the movie of the same name, which was released in 2014 by Clement and Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople). Waititi serves as an executive producer for the series along with Paul Simms (The Larry Sanders Show, Atlanta), Sam Johnson (Frasier, NewsRadio), and Garrett Basch (The Night Of, Reservation Dogs).
What We Do in the Shadows focuses on the lives of four vampire roommates in Staten Island. Kayvan Novak (Fonejacker, Four Lions) plays Nandor, Matt Berry (Toast of London, The IT Crowd) plays Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flat, The Magician’s Elephant) plays Nadja, and Mark Proksch (The Office, Better Call Saul) plays Colin. They each have to navigate the modern world together along with their human familiar named Guillermo, who is played by Harvey Guillén (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Blue Beetle).
The fourth season ended with Guillermo begging and bribing his friend Derek, played by Christopher Sandiford (God’s Favorite Idiot, Moonfall), to turn him into a vampire. The trailer for the fifth season teases this transformation.
The trailer can be viewed here.
Additionally, as noted by Indiewire, the fifth season also focuses on Colin running for a political office, Nadja reconnecting with her ancestry, Laszlo attempting to study the strange effects of Guillermo’s transformation, and more. The Guide, played by Kristen Schaal (The Last Man on Earth, Bob’s Burgers), will have a more leading role in this season than in the past.
On July 13th, fans can see how this group of supernatural beings continue discovering more about themselves and each other in the fifth season of What We Do in the Shadows.
