According to Deadline, FX’s Shōgun made a powerful debut on streaming platforms, garnering significant attention.
In the domestic market, Disney reports that Shōgun surpassed The Bear Season Two to become the highest-ranking FX premiere on its streaming platforms. This achievement was likely bolstered by the recent availability of FX releases on Disney+ for Bundle subscribers, giving Shōgun an edge that The Bear Season Two did not have.
According to Disney via Deadline, the premiere episode of the limited series attracted 9 million views globally across Hulu, Disney+, and Star+ within its first six days. Internationally, Shōgun claimed the top spot as the most-watched general entertainment series for the company, surpassing The Kardashians Season One.
The last instance of Disney releasing streaming data was for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which garnered over 13 million views within six days on Disney+ and Hulu. Likewise, the premiere episode of Ahsoka accumulated 14 million views in its inaugural week.
Disney defines “views” as the total stream time divided by the runtime, a methodology akin to Netflix’s approach. The company seldom discloses definitive streaming data, rendering comparisons of Shōgun’s performance challenging.
Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth, Calm with Horses) leads the cast as John Blackthorne, accompanied by an esteemed Japanese ensemble—an unprecedented feat for a U.S. production. The ensemble includes producer Hiroyuki Sanada (Ring, The Last Samurai) as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai (F9, Ninja Assassin) as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer, 47 Ronin) as Kashigi Yabushige, Hiroto Kanai (Labyrinth of Cinema, Shômonai bokura no renai-ron) as Kashigi Omi, Takehiro Hira (Girl/Haji, Lesson of the Evil) as Ishido Kazunari, Moeka Hoshi (The 12 Day Tale of the Monster that Died at 8, On the Street) as Usami Fuji, Tokuma Nishioka (Call Boy, Zero Women) as Toda Hiromatsu, Shinnosuke Abe (13 Assassins, Kamen Rider 555) as Buntaro, Yuki Kura (Kasoken no Otoko, Dog and Scum) as Yoshii Nagakado, Yuka Kouri (Tokyo Vice, Invasion) as Kiku, and Fumi Nikaido (The Moon, Fly Me to the Saitama) as Ochiba no Kata.
Shōgun is brought to television audiences by Rachel Kondo (Girl of Few Seasons) and Justin Marks (Top Gun: Maverick, The Jungle Book) with Marks assuming the roles of showrunner and executive producer. He is joined by a team of executive producers including Michaela Clavell (Octopussy, The Children’s Story), Edward L. McDonnell (Sicario, Eagle Eye), Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Moneyball), and Rachel Kondo.
The initial trio of episodes of Shōgun are currently available for streaming, with subsequent episodes scheduled to premiere every Tuesday until April 23rd. The upcoming installment, titled “The Eightfold Fence,” is set to stream on March 12th on Hulu.
