Season four of the acclaimed period crime drama Snowfall premiered on February 24 on FX, according to TV Line. The network aired the first two episodes of the season one after the other during a two-hour programming block. The official FX YouTube channel recently uploaded an excerpt from the first of the two new episodes, “Re-Entry,” as reported by Complex. The clip is set in a swanky bar operated by Aunt Louie (Angela Lewis, Code Black) and her boyfriend Jerome (Amin Joseph, Stuber), and features a conversation between Aunt Louie and Franklin Saint (Damson Idris, Farming). In the clip above, Franklin appears to be recovering from injuries he sustained during the penultimate episode of season three, when he was shot in the back by Melody (Reign Edwards, The Wilds) as payback for murdering her policeman father Andre (Marcus Henderson, Tacoma F.D.) during the prior episode, as reported by The New York Post. Snowfall viewers have been eager to learn whether or not Franklin survived his encounter with Melody since that episode’s September 2019 air date, seeing as how the season three finale “Other Lives” was functionally more of an experimental short film exploring a hypothetical scenario concerning the choices Franklin could have made as a teenager, according to The A.V. Club.
In an interview with BuzzFeed, Idris explained that season four sees Franklin, as well as his allies and rivals, reacting violently to the federal crackdown on the narcotics trade: “We start in January 1985 and Reagan’s war on drugs is fully ramped up, and our characters are going through complete turmoil… [Franklin] is basically putting himself back together and trying to convince himself, and everyone around him, that he is still the boss… I think the audience [will find] the payoff for this season is really going to be worth it,” via BuzzFeed. Idris additionally made mention of the possibility that some familiar characters may be saying untimely goodbyes in season four. “There have been times when… people have cried, because people are about to be killed [off the show]. I can’t tell you which ones happened this season,” Idris teased, via BuzzFeed.
Also returning for season four, albeit in a scriptwriting capacity, is award-winning novelist Walter Mosley (Blue Light, Fortunate Son). Mosley has been present in the series’ writer’s room since season two, The New York Post reports. Plans to adapt Mosley’s own Easy Rawlins Mysteries book series for the small screen are allegedly in motion over at Amblin Television, as reported by Variety. Sylvain White (Slender Man), who previously directed episodes of Snowfall‘s fellow FX programs Fargo and The Americans, has reportedly been attached as executive producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first two episodes of Snowfall season four premiered exclusively on FX at 10 P.M. Eastern on Wednesday, February 24.
