FX Renews ‘Legion’ for Season Two

Marvel is continuing its newer relationship with FX. The cable network has renewed freshman mutant drama Legion for a second season, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“The first season of Legion was a stunning achievement. More than a new series, Legion is a wholly original take on the superhero genre. Our thanks to Noah Hawley for taking the creative risks and shattering expectations,” FX Programming President Eric Schrier said.

Legion focuses on Dan Stevens’ David Haller, a mutant who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The show is told in a non-linear format and is noted for its use of an unreliable narrator in Haller, which some critics have praised while others haven’t been as thrilled with.

Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza and Jean Smart also star on the show.

The road to getting Legion on air was a long road. Show creator Hawley was initially approached on doing a show in the X-Men universe back in 2014, when he’d finished the first season of Fargo, another popular FX show.

The pilot was ordered in October 2015 and FX CEO John Landgraf noted in January 2016 that it would be a show that would likely get picked up. Landgraf’s prediction came true in May 2016, when FX picked the show up for a first season, consisting of eight episodes. The show premiered back in February of this year.

The show premiered to 1.6 million viewers, which is on the lower end of viewership averages for FX, but makes significant gains when DVR and on-demand viewing is factored in.

Legion airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. on FX. All of the episodes are available for streaming on Hulu.
