FX Renews ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ for Four More Seasons To Become Longest-Running Live-Action Comedy Series in History

The Gang Gets Four More Years. During the 2020 Disney Investor Day call, FX’s CEO John Landgraf announced that its hit comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed for four more seasons to reach the 18th season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This move makes the series the longest-running live-action comedy series in television history surpassing Ozzie and Harriet’s previous 14 seasons record. Currently, the series has aired its seasons on the sister channel FXX since 2013 for its ninth season.

Created by Rob McElhenney (Mythic Quest), the series first aired on FX in 2005 and has released a total of 154 episodes of its 14 season run, racking more than 1.5 billion hours of viewership from fans since its premiere. The series centers on the livelihoods and schemes of a seriously dysfunctional friend group that owns and operates Paddy’s Pub in Philadelphia. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s cast features McElhenney as Mac, Kaitlin Olson (The Mick) as Deandra Reynolds, Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) as Charlie Kelly, Glenn Howerton (A.P. Bio) as Dennis Reynolds, and Danny Devito (Taxi) as Frank Reynolds. Day and Howerton also serve as executive producers alongside McElhenney in addition to Nick Frenkel (The Cool Kids) and Michael Rotenberg (King of the Hill).

Currently, there is no word regarding when the series will air its fifteenth season, but is estimated to premiere sometime in 2021. In McElhenney’s own words, “When we first pitched Sunny, we saw it as a 36-season arc. We are so excited to be halfway there,” via an FX Press Release. Currently, all of the 14 seasons of the long-running comedy series is available on Hulu.
