While the writing was already underway, it has now been officially confirmed that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed for its 15th season by FX, as reported by Deadline. With this renewal, the series has come out ahead as the first live-action comedy show to ever hit fifteen seasons.
This achievement is appropriately matched by series creator Rob McElhenney (The Mindy Project)’s enthusiasm and plans for the series. McElhenney, also the head writer, one of the lead actors, and producer for Always Sunny, emphasized in an interview with NME that he would make the show “forever.” “If they keep paying me and the audience keeps watching it and I still love it… why would I ever stop,” he continued, adding that both Always Sunny and his new show Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet can co-exist. While reflecting on an episode of Always Sunny that revolves around the characters undergoing a quarantine, he added that this new season would address the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside McElhenney, who portrays Ronald “Mac” McDonald in the show, co-creators Glenn Howerton (A.P. Bio) and Charlie Day (Pacific Rim) also serve as writers, producers, and actors, portraying Dennis Reynolds and Charlie Kelly, respectively. Danny Devito (Hercules) and Kaitlin Olson (Finding Dory) also star as Frank Reynolds and Deandra “Sweet Dee” Reynolds.
The show has been popular for a long time and this new record solidifies it as one of FX’s biggest hits among its original series. Premiering in 2005, the series has become known for its dark, boundary-pushing humor that warps the traditional conventions of TV sitcoms. The 14th season ran from September to November of 2019 and the entire series can be streamed on Hulu. Despite the confirmation and renewal, the formal start of production and eventual air date remain unknown.
The renewal comes alongside a multitude of other announcements released by FX concerning their 2021 slate. FX original series such as What We Do in the Shadows, Breeders, Dave, Better Things, and The Weekly have also recently received a renewal from the network.
