FX has decided that it will not move forward in creating an animated adult action-comedy series for Deadpool. Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover were set to write, executive produce, and be the showrunners. Last May Deadpool got a ten episode straight to series order. It was expected to air in 2018 on FXX.
FX said, “Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series. FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”
It is unknown whether or not Marvel Television will attempt to shop the series elsewhere or if it will go to Disney’s direct to consumer subscription service that they have planned. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger did say that the company’s streaming service will have an original Marvel series.
Floyd County (the animation house for Archer) was expected to do the animation production for Deadpool; however, even though the series was thought to air this year, it was not in active production and there might not have been any scripts set to them. Also, the voice cast was never set.
This is the second Marvel project to be dropped even though it was attached to a network. Last year Marvel’s New Warriors was dropped by Freeform. The project has not found a new home. Although the project did not work out this time, with Disney’s soon-to-be acquisition of 20th Century Fox there is still a chance that an animated Deadpool series might come in the future.
