According to Screenrant, the acclaimed series Shogun, an adaptation based on James Clavell’s (Tai-Pan) novel of the same name, has received an update on the second season production. The show’s first season critical acclaim, with a near-perfect 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, further emphasizing the high standards viewers can expect. The series is set in medieval Japan and follows the fateful meeting between two ambitious men, John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis (Calm with Horses), and Toranaga, played by Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Combat).John becomes a samurai warrior later on, but unknown to him, he becomes a pawn to fulfill Toranaga’s plan of becoming the Shogun.
According to Screenrant, while premiere date has yet to be revealed, the chairman of FX, John Landgraf (Reno 911!: Miami), gave a statement on the starting window and an update on the start of production in an interview via Variety.
Landgraf explained, “We’re hoping to be in production relatively early next year. But it’s a long production period. I think between principal and second unit days of photography, that show shot between 180 and 190 days or more, could have been close to 200.”
According to a previous mxdwn post, the acclaimed series has received 25 nominations and is ranked as the second non-English series to receive the best in drama. The series has also received acting nominations for the leading roles of Anna Sawai (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) and Hiroyuki Sanada, with supporting nominations including Takehrio Hira (Snake Eyes) and Tadanobu Asano (Battleship).
According to Screenrant, unlike the first season, which has already adapted the novel, the second season leaves the production team with the creative freedom to develop its own narrative within the upcoming season. While little information is known about the story behind the second season, the entire first season of Shogun is available to stream on Hulu. The wait for Shogun season two might seem long, but Landgraf’s update assures fans that the production team is dedicated to delivering another epic and unforgettable season.
