The anticipated season premiere of The Mindy Project added Freida Pinto today.
Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) is going to guest star on the show as Danny’s (Chris Messina) girlfriend, according to Entertainment Weekly. Fans of the Danny/Mindy (Mindy Kaling) relationship shouldn’t worry about this news though. The TV couple will be going strong when the show returns, but the season four premiere is going to be something different.
The premiere is inspired by the 1998 film Sliding Doors and will show an alternative reality for the show’s characters. It will imagine how Mindy’s life would be different if she wasn’t with Danny and was married to another man.
As we reported on here, that other man is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt and Pinto will only appear in that one episode. The ambitious sounding premiere of season four will mark a new beginning for The Mindy Project.
The show was cancelled by Fox after three seasons but was revived by Hulu for season four. The streaming service ordered 26 episodes of the comedy that has reimagined the rom-com genre. Creator and star, Kaling talked about the move on AdWeek.
“The first thing Craig [Hulu’s Head Of Content] said to me was what a fan he was of the show and that he didn’t want it to change,” Kaling told AdWeek. “One of the single best things is this feeling from them, that’s exhilarating to me, that they don’t want to change the process because it’s on Hulu now—which, as an artist, obviously I love. I think that’s why most people choose to go to nonmajor networks to do their material.”
Kaling tweeted about filming today, giving a peak at who to expect to see when the show returns.
