According to Deadline, the comedy series While You Were Breeding was set to premiere in August on Freeform, which is owned by Walt Disney Television. Due to the WGA strike, post-production for the show had to be paused, and the premiere date was moved to sometime in 2024. Now that the strike has ended, Freeform decided to not move forward with the series.
As Deadline notes, Walt Disney Television is undergoing company-wide changes, such as removing content to reduce costs. Sources told Deadline that the decision to scrap While You Were Breeding was made with Disney’s new plans in mind. Throughout the strike, Disney decided to not move forward with various completed or nearly completed series that were supposed to premiere on Disney+, such as The Spiderwick Chronicles and Nautilus.
Freeform Studios, which produced the series, will have the opportunity to shop the series to another platform.
While You Were Breeding is based on a memoir by Kristin Newman (That 70s Show, How I Met Your Mother) titled What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding: A Memoir. Newman was an executive producer for the series along with Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Booksmart) and Blair Breard (The Half of It, Better Things).
The first season consists of ten episodes total and revolves around the life of the main character Kacey, who is played by Chelsea Frei (Sideswiped, Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter). Kacey must navigate being single in her thirties for the first time while simultaneously exploring new places and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.
Other stars of the series include Catherine Cohen (Dating and New York, Catherine Cohen: The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous) as Sasha, Alice Hunter (House of Lies, Girl House) as Hope, Kosha Patel (The Newsroom, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) as Rikita, and more.
Fans who were looking forward to While You Were Breeding can still hold out hope that the series will be bought by a different platform.
