Following the casting of their leads for direct-to-series program Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, showrunner Joe Pokaski (Underground) has finalized his key players for the newest television superhero drama. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the names that will appear alongside Olivia Holt (Dagger) and The Night Of‘s Aubrey Joseph (Cloak).
Gloria Reuben, of ER fame, and Miles Mussenden will be portraying the parents of Aubrey Joseph’s Tyrone. The working class family believes in their son, but their lives spent working are not spent giving the tortured young man the type of affection he so desperately strives for. Tyrone’s new powers, the manifestation and manipulation of pure darkness, are likely to create an even bigger split between the already divided family. Though his metaphorical cloak gives him the capability to protect himself and others from danger, it is also likely to shield him from the attempts his parents make to get to know the young man beneath it.
As for Holt’s Tandy Bowen, her mother (Melissa Bowen) will be played by Andrea Roth. Roth has appeared in series such as RoboCop: The Series and Rescue Me as the wife of lead actor Denis Leary’s Tommy Gavin. Judging by The Hollywood Reporter’s brief synopsis, Melissa is more in the loop than Tyrone’s kin but struggles to accept the reality of her daughter’s ability to throw light in the form of damaging projectiles (daggers, get it?) and her decision to operate as a superhero. Carl Lundstedt and James Saito will also appear as figures close to Tandy and Tyrone respectively.
The final major player comes in the form of Detective Connors, portrayed by True Detective and The Walking Dead alum J.D. Evermore. Evermore has extensive experience in the field of high profile television projects, and his chops are sure to have a central role in the series. After all, though Tandy and Tyrone mean well in their deeds they are still technically vigilantes. Connors might be an investigator set on finding them or a long-running antagonist in his own signature way.
The series is Freeform’s first shot at a Marvel concept and one of their first bouts with superheroics in a long time. Though the partnership might seem oversaturated at this point, the inclusion of the big names at Marvel TV Studios is certainly a huge step in ensuring the episodes will do a sufficient job in analyzing the nuances of two characters who have been yearning for a television program for a long time. The series does not have an official release date, with sources stating that it could take until 2018 to get all their ducks in a row, but until then fans can analyze and anticipate a seriously charged premiere in typical comic fashion.
