An adaptation of Ragdoll, from British novelist Daniel Cole, is being developed for AMC, and Alibi, a British network, by Freddy Syborn, the co-creator of Sky One’s Bounty Hunters, who is also writing and co-executive producing Disney+’s upcoming Ms. Marvel series, according to Deadline. Ragdoll follows Killing Eve as another British import from the Sid Gentle Films production company for AMC.
The series will air in six parts and tells the story of the “Ragdoll Killer,” so called because the aforementioned murderer kills six people, dismembers their bodies and sews them together to form, what the characters call, the “Ragdoll,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Three London police will lead the series, having received a hitlist from the killer.
Ragdoll is set to air later in 2021, with filming beginning in London in the spring, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Syborn said he hopes the series can be both comical and thrilling.
“I hope Ragdoll will be a visually exciting, darkly funny thriller in which the personal is the political,” Syborn said, according to Deadline. “Above all, I hope our characters can make you laugh, then break your heart.”
Collie Cousins, who will co-executive produce alongside AMC’s head of originals, Dan McDermott, as well as Sally Woodward Gentle, Lee Morris, Kristin Jones and Syborn, said Ragdoll’s wit, characters and atmosphere is what makes it special.
“Ragdoll is a dystopian, mesmerising, wickedly funny piece of hard-boiled detective screen fiction,” Cousins said, according to Deadline. “It invites the audience into a timeless world of crime thriller, sending us on a rollercoaster ride with flawed, compelling Wolf, his best friend/cop partner Baxter and rookie Edmunds. Atmospheric, they tread a maverick route to the truth in a broken world, with echoes of Raymond Chandler meets Tina Fey in their memorable banter. Beautifully designed, with the pure evil, suspense and attention to detail of Silence of the Lambs,” Cousins said.
McDermott praised Sid Gentle Films and said the series has much potential, being led by Syborn.
“We have enjoyed and been impressed with Sid Gentle Films during our partnership on Killing Eve, so we jumped at the opportunity to work with them again on Ragdoll,” McDermott said, according to Deadline. “This dark yet comedic project written by the talented Freddy has the makings of a fast-paced yet cerebral thriller featuring the premium storytelling and compelling characters viewers expect from AMC.”
