Deadline reported that Fox’s new animated comedy series, Krapopolis, premiered to a large audience on Sunday Night. Fox stated that the series received 3.6 million viewers and a Live+ Same Day rating among adults ages 19-49, according to Deadline.
Deadline also reported that Fox said that Krapopolis was the most-watched telecast of a Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) animated series ever and the most-watched animated series premiere in the last decade.
The big audience is partially due to Fox airing the episode after a Sunday NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears that Taylor Swift (Cats, The Lorax) attended to support Chief’s player Travis Kelce.
The network also stated that was the number one original comedy telecast of 2023, which beat out the premiere of the reboot of Night Court, according to Deadline. Fox added that Krapopolis was the highest-rated entertainment program for adults 18-49 the week of September 19.
This is the first time an animated series premiere was the top rated entertainment program of the week since the debut of Family Guy 25 years ago in 1999. This is likely a result of Krapopolis being the only new series airing because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Krapopolis takes place in a mythical version of Ancient Greece and follows the dysfunctional family of the benevolent king of Krapopolis, Tyrannis. The family is made up of humans, gods, and monsters trying to run the world’s first city.
The series stars Richard Ayoade (Travel Man, The IT Crowd), Duncan Trussell (The Midnight Gospel, Adventure Time: Distant Lands), Pam Murphy (Monsters University, Another Period), Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones, Ted Lasso), and Matt Berry (Toast of London, What We Do in the Shadows).
Krapopolis has been renewed through season three and it will move to its regular timeslot in Fox’s Animation Domination block on October 1. The block includes Family Guy, The Simpsons, and Bob’s Burgers.
It is created by Harmon, who executive produces with series showrunner Jordan Young (Krapopolis). Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment produces.
