Fox’s Gotham, a series about the story before Batman became Batman for those unfamiliar, has officially released their trailer for their fifth and final season which is set to debut on Jan. 3. All of the big hitters are coming out for the swan-song season, and a whole lot of us are kind of excited about that nugget of news. Yes, there are fans and followers for the series, but I am not one of them. And a lot of my problem with this show is its constant residence in the origin story of Batman, but it’s not really about Bruce becoming Batman as much as it is Gotham becoming the failed state in need of saving by the caped crusader. It’s a show building to an ending that is the beginning for a chapter that is far more enticing than the journey we find ourselves apart of in Gotham.
That being said, it is fairly evident that the show is finally approaching the notorious silver-screen era that has been depicted time and time again. Gordon at one point states “However dark and scary the world might be right now, there is light.” The line curiously resembles Dent’s spiel in “The Dark Knight” in which he says: “The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.”
The farewell season will depict Wayne’s final arc towards that dawn, the reveal of the caped crusader, the debut of the iconic DC comics character that celebrates his 80th birthday in 2019. Fans will be excited to see the final snippet of the show being Bruce’s debut with the cowl. I just wish that was the show we got from the start, a live-action series about the Batman and his daily habitual of being the silent guardian for the crime-infested streets of Gotham. That’s just me.
