Fox’s Best Medicine is making a pair of casting updates ahead of its second season. According to Screen Rant, Stephen Spinella (Lincoln, Rubber, Ravenous) and Jason Veasey (American Gangster, Only Murders in the Building, Friendship) have been promoted to series regulars for the upcoming season of the Fox medical comedy-drama.
The pair portray Greg Garrison and George Brady, a married couple who relocated from New York and own the local restaurant, The Salty Breeze. Since the series premiered earlier this year, the characters have become fan favorites within the small coastal community at the center of the show.
Based on Dominic Minghella’s (Robin Hood, Doctor Mateo, Knightfall) British comedy-drama Doc Martin, Best Medicine follows a successful surgeon who develops a debilitating fear of blood and relocates to a small fishing village in Maine, where he takes over a local medical practice. The series premiered on Fox on January 4 and was renewed for a second season in March.
The series stars Josh Charles (Dead Poets Society, Four Brothers, The Good Wife) as Dr. Martin Best, a renowned surgeon who relocates to a small Maine fishing village after developing a fear of blood. The cast also includes Abigail Spencer (Mad Men, Oz the Great and Powerful, Rectify), Annie Potts (Ghostbusters, Young Sheldon, Designing Women), Josh Segarra (Arrow, Overboard, Trainwreck), Patrick Fischler (Mad Men, Happy!, NCIS: Origins), Spinella, and Veasey.
Executive producer and showrunner Liz Tuccillo (How to Be Single, Sex and the City, He’s Just Not That Into You) praised the promotion of Spinella and Veasey, describing the actors as integral members of the cast who consistently bring humor and warmth to the series. Executive producer Rodney Ferrell (Stick, King Shaka, Pinches Momias) also highlighted the importance of Greg and George within the show’s community while celebrating the promotion of two LGBTQ+ actors during Pride Month.
Season two will consist of 14 episodes and is currently filming in New York. The expanded roles for Greg and George are expected to result in additional storylines centered around the couple and their restaurant, which has become a key gathering place within the series.
While it remains to be seen whether Best Medicine can match the longevity of Doc Martin, the series has enjoyed a strong start for Fox. According to Screen Rant, the show became the network’s most-streamed debut in three years following its premiere, with the early renewal signaling confidence in its long-term future.
Season two of Best Medicine is expected to premiere on Fox this fall.
