Fox revealed a new trailer for its country music drama series, Monarch, starring Susan Sarandon (Search Party, Thelma & Louise) and Tracie Adkins (I Can Only Imagine) as the king and queen of a family music dynasty. Check out the trailer below.
Sarandon and Adkins portray Dottie and Albie Roman, Nashville royalty as they lead the first family of country music. Among their loyal subjects are their children Nicolette “Nicky'” Roman, played by Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies, Marcella); Joshua Sasse (Her Pen Pal, Galavant) as Luke Roman; and, the youngest daughter, Gigi-Taylor Roman, played by singer-songwriter Beth Ditto (Fake Sugar).
To a cover of Garth Brooks’s “The Thunder Rolls,” the trailer introduces viewers to the melodrama of the Roman family. The eldest Roman daughter, Nicky, seeks to inherit the crown from her beloved mother who is planning to retire. Feeling ready to continue the Romans’ musical reign, Nicky will be faced with a sea of doubters. Meanwhile son Luke, CEO of the family business, is fighting to lead the company to a better future. But it is clear the Roman family is a matriarchy, and the queen isn’t quite ready to relinquish the reins. Finally, Gigi seeks to blaze her own musical trail, upending the hierarchy and changing the face and sound of Nashville. And if this isn’t enough inner conflict, a dark family secret threatens to demolish the very institution that has taken decades to build.
The series was created and written by Melissa London Hilfers (Blasphemy, Jagged Edge) with Jon Feldman (Lovelife, Tru Calling) attached as showrunner. The two will serve as executive producers along with Hend Baghdady (Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, Axe Cop), Gail Berman (Elvis, The Addams Family 2), Jason Ensler (Grilled, Martha Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart), and Jason Owen (Dawson’s Creek, Ricki Lake). Ensler directed the two-episode premiere.
Monarch is set to begin its two-night premiere event on January 30 following the NFL’s NFC Championship game.
