On Tuesday, Fox Corp. revealed that its streaming service Fox One will launch August 21. Subscriptions will cost a monthly price of $19.99, according to Deadline. The announcement of a streaming service came earlier this year, but pricing and launch details were withheld. The $19.99 price point was at the low end according to most industry and Wall Street projections.
The news of the streaming service came with CEO Lachlan Murdoch’s prepared remarks on the fiscal fourth quarter earnings call of Fox Corp. According to Deadline, the company’s reports for the April-to-June period had “better-than-expected results,” due to being driven largely by advertising gains.
Deadline writes, “Fox One is a truly innovative digital offering,” Murdoch had said. The service “will be marketed to the cordless market,” Murdoch added. Not only will it also will be made available at no extra charge to pay-TV subscribers, and this also alludes to cord-cutters and cord-nevers. Additionally, Pete Distad, a longtime former Apple exec who previously was leading Venu Sports, is overseeing the launch of Fox One.
After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, instead of joining the streaming wars, Fox Corp. had instead acquired ad-driven free service Tubi. After the success of Fox Nation, the company then shifted its strategy earlier this year. In May, Fox Corp. then announced its plans to offer a streaming alternative, according to Deadline. News, sports and entertainment programming will all be a part of Fox One. Fox has not revealed whether or not it will make any film or television specifically for the flagship subscription service.
“We will be offering bundling opportunities that make sense to achieve our targeted objectives,” Murdoch said, according to Deadline. Murdoch continued, “our aspitations are modest and are measured in the investment toward this initiative will match those long-term goals.”
