New Girl has been renewed for a sixth season by Fox, Variety reports. The network made the announcement on Tuesday. The series starring Zooey Deschanel has become the sixth current Fox comedy picked up for the 2016-17 season joining other comedies including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Last Man on Earth, and animated comedy series The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers.
New Girl is also currently the network’s longest running live-action comedy with its 100th episode which aired in March. David Madden,Fox’s Broadcasting entertainment president said “Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether [showrunner] is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling” Madden also said “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode, and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”
In addition to Deschanel, the popular series also stars Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, and Lamorne Morris.
In Nielsen’s “live plus-3” estimates, this season’s New Girl is averaging a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 with 3.6 million viewers. Since the ending of American Idol, Fox is looking to fill close to 40 hours of programming time which was formerly taking up by the singing competition. The network is closing that 40 hour gap with more pilots which are in development and by renewing a large number of new and returning shows. The comedies featured on Fox are not the only genres being picked up, dramas including Lucifer, Rosewood, Empire, Scream Queens, Gotham, and Bones have all been picked up for additional seasons.
New Girl is executive produced by Meriweather along with Brett Baer, Dave Finkel, Jake Kasdan, Peter Chernin, and Katherine Pope. The comedy series is produced by Chernin Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox Television.
