Bless the Harts follows a family trying to make ends meet in the American South. Specifically, the show centers on Jenny Hart (Kristin Wigg), a single mother working as a waitress to support her daughter Violet (Jillian Bell). Both are joined in the core cast of characters by Jenny’s boyfriend Wayne (Ike Barinholtz), Jenny’s mother Betty (Maya Rudolf), and an imagined projection of Jesus Christ (Kumail Nanjiani) that provides Jenny with guidance.
Speaking on the decision to renew the show, President of Fox Entertainment Michael Thorne said, “”Bless the Harts is an incredibly sharp, yet sweet, series that complements the Fox Animation Domination block perfectly. It simply doesn’t get much better than having a comedy anchored by talent like Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, Jillian Bell and Kumail Nanjiani. We want to thank creator and executive producer Emily Spivey, whose unique voice and personal experience brought this family to life, as well as executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and our partners at 20th Century Fox Television. We are thrilled to watch the Hart family experience more adventures, mishaps and boxed wine for another amazing season.”
Despite the enthusiastic words from Thorne, Bless the Harts is being renewed in spite of a lackluster rollout. Per Deadline, the show has averages 3.3 million viewers per episode, which amounts to mediocre ratings in a spot in Fox’s lineup that follows The Simpsons.
That being said, the show is expected to follow the lead of other Fox comedies like Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, which, per The Hollywood Reporter, “at least doubled their initial audiences via multiplatform viewing.”
Bless the Harts is currently in its first season, having aired three episodes so far. The show forms a part of Fox’s Sunday evening Animation Domination block, airing at 8:30pm ET/PT.
