Upon seeing set photos of Hagrid, played by Nick Frost (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, How to Train Your Dragon), former Harry Potter film director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) began to wonder why HBO plans to adapt author J.K. Rowling’s (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) books again. Columbus made these comments while appearing on The Rest is Entertainment podcast promoting The Thursday Murder Club. These comments came shortly after the acclaimed director recently said he did not want to be involved in HBO’s adaption, citing the fact that there was “nothing left to do for him in the world of Potter.”
According to Deadline, Columbus saw set photos from the series’ London shoot and was baffled by how similar HBO’s Hagrid looked to the late Robbie Coltrane’s (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) Hagrid.
“So, I’m seeing these photographs… and he’s wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me was like, what’s the point?” Columbus said in the podcast via Deadline. “I thought everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same.”
Although he was confused regarding the point of HBO doing a reboot, Deadline writes that Columbus went on the podcast saying, “It’s very flattering for me, because I’m like, that’s exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed. So, part of it is really exciting, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with it. Part of it is sort of deja vu all over again.”
Columbus also recently said that there were things he wasn’t able to include in the movies, such as the character Peeves, and the director was very excited to see how HBO might include these things. However, Deadline writes that this doesn’t mean he’s envious of HBO for being able to include these things in a series format.
“Jealous? No,” he said with honesty. “It’s time to move on. I’ve always had issues with [the] idea of franchise. I feel like I’ve done it. I’m really proud of those films, the first three that I was involved with, and I’m moving on.”
According to an article on mxdwn, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is now in production. There is currently no confirmed release date.
