TVLine reports that Saw Gerrera (played by Forest Whitaker in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) will be featured in Disney XD’s television series Star Wars Rebels.
Star Wars Rebels has announced that they are introducing a younger version of Gerrera in the upcoming episode “Ghosts of Geonosis, Parts One and Two.” Since Disney owns both XD and the Star Wars franchise, the merger is a natural one, and helps build the backstory of the man we saw in Rogue One.
Although it must be noted that the character of Gerrera has already been inducted into the animated world, as Star Wars: The Clone Wars showed the fighter training beneath Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and Jedi Anakin Skywalker. Flash forward several years into Rogue One, audiences can see the great strides he has made in his fighting career and the physical and mental toll it has taken.
While Forest Whitaker brought Saw Gerrera’s portrayal to the mainstream, the animated character was previously voiced by Andrew Kishino on The Clone Wars. However, Whitaker will be returning to the role as he returns to voice for Star Wars Rebels.
Executive producer Dave Filoni complimented Whitaker’s portrayal, saying, “It’s an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in Rebels. Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it’s too late.”
Star Wars Rebels “Ghosts of Genesis, Parts One and Two” will premiere Saturday, January 7.
