‘For the Record Live’ Puts Film Music to Live Performances for ABC

What Project Greenlight did for directing and Face Off did for special effects design a new ABC show is going to do for soundtracks. A collaboration between the network and dick clark productions has been announced that will bring For the Record Live to television audiences, showcasing music from noteworthy films through live performances.

Dick clark productions described the show as a genre-bending production that turns the soundtracks of iconic director’s films into immersive live-entertainment events. ABC is expecting big things from the concept. Deadline quotes network president Channing Dungey, “For the Record Live is a first-of-its-kind live musical event made for ABC. The show will be a game changer for the genre.”

Dungey doesn’t have to convince anybody. Just watch this trailer for the company’s John Hughes production. (Or watch is 5 times in a row like I did.)

For the Record has been around as a theater production since 2010 when it began as small supper club shows in East Hollywood. Three film and theater performers, Shane Scheel, Christopher Lloyd Bratten, and Anderson Davis, set out to mesh L.A.’s love for film with the deep pool of talented local theater actors. In 2015 Scheel told Variety, “We knew there was this amazing talent pool out there. Los Angeles is filled with people that come off Broadway shows or American Idol’ or any number of competition shows, and there were very few places for them to showcase their talents.”

In a short time the productions earned runs on stages in Chicago, New York, at SXSW, on Norwegian Cruise Lines, and in partnership with Las Vegas’ Cirque du Soleil. The various performances have featured music from the films of John Hughes, Robert Zemeckis, The Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Garry Marshal, Baz Luhrmann, and Martin Scorsese.

Depending on the show’s location popular actors sometimes step in for a turn on stage. Rumer Willis (Hostage), Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe), Barrett Foa (NCIS: LA), and Rogelio Douglas Jr. (Orange is the New Black) have all appeared; with the jump to TV its likely more brand-name stars will show up.

Dick clark productions is well known for musical TV specials including The American Music Awards, The Passion, and the Academy of Country Music Awards. Several of the company’s senior leadership will executive produce along with Scheel.
