Forbidden love takes the form of a teacher and student in the first trailer for the FX on Hulu limited series, A Teacher. Starring Kate Mara (House of Cards) and Nick Robinson (Love,Simon), it will debut on Tuesday, November 10 via Deadline.
Mara stars as newcomer Claire, beginning a job as a high school teacher in Texas. Though already married, she enters into a romantic relationship with one of her students, Eric, portrayed by Robinson. An All-American football player, Eric struggles to hide whats going on from his many teammates. Deemed illegal in the state of Texas, complications ensue as Claire and Eric fall further and further into their relationship.
Set within a vast and limitless Texas town filled with cowboy hats, football, and green fields, the trailer is laced with tension as the two attempt to keep their affair secret. It has elements of a thriller along with melodrama as passions of the heart control the two leads. Stealing glances at one another in hallways and classrooms, it seems near impossible to keep the forbidden romance under wraps. Things begin to unravel as their relationship is outed and Eric and Claire must deal with the consequences of their actions.
A Teacher will depict the potentially harmful effects of an adult entering a relationship with a minor. It digs deep in examining how Eric handles the affair and observes the many sides of such a controversial situation. The upcoming series is an adaptation of the 2013 film of the same name directed and written by Hannah Fidell (6 Years). She will also serve as director and executive producer of the show. Deadline picked up a quote from Fidell discussing the student-teacher relationship within A Teacher and how she wanted her take on it to be different: “We just sort of wanted to make the audience complicit in the affair. The relationship is actually not what it seems and there’s a really bad side of it and potentially he’s a victim here. I want the audience to feel that way as well so to go through the journey with Eric.”
A Teacher will not be like any of the other current teen dramas on television. According to Deadline, Fidell wanted to make sure she steered clear of romanticizing the student-teacher relationship that many shows have portrayed, including Riverdale. The drama will consist of 10 episodes.
