The first teaser trailer for Sky Italia’s Gomorrah – The Origins was revealed Thursday, with a release date set for early 2026, Deadline reports.
The highly anticipated prequel to the Italian mob crime saga Gomorrah, the series is set in 1977 Naples and will trace the evolution of a young Pietro Savastano, who heads the Camorra crime syndicate’s Savastano clan, Deadline reports.
An official synopsis provided by Deadline reads: “Pietro is a tough city kid who grew up in the poorest parts of Secondigliano. He and his friends survive any way they can, riding their mopeds around town and committing petty theft. But he has a big dream: to become like Angelo ‘A Sirena’, the neighborhood’s ‘king.’ When he manages to get in the graces of the young boss, he finds himself caught in a power game far beyond him. He ends up wondering whether this dark, violent criminal life is really what he wants or if his love for Imma can save him from such a fate.”
Inspired by Roberto Saviano’s (Piranhas, ZeroZeroZero) bestselling novel and produced by Sky Studios and Cattleya, Origins will provide the backstory for one of Sky’s most popular foreign shows. According to Deadline, the series is planned to last at least three seasons.
Origins is directed by Marco D’Amore (The Immortal, Caracas), who led the new series’ first four episodes in addition to serving as co-writer and artistic supervisor, while Francesco Ghiaccio (Un posto sicuro, The Sweeties) directed the final two episodes. Per Deadline, the series is created by Leonardo Fasoli (Django, The Monster of Florence), Saviano, and Maddalena Ravagli (The Kollective, Ultimo 5) and is distributed internationally by Beta Film.
According to Deadline, the series stars Luca Lubrano (Naples in Veils, Devils), who portrays a young Savastano; Francesco Pellegrino (The Miracle Child, Supersex) as Angelo ‘A Sirena’, a lamenting gangster who Savastano idolizes; Flavio Furno (Emily in Paris, Marconi) as ‘O Paisano’, a convict who seeks to reform the Camorra; Tullia Venezia as a young Imma, who dreams of becoming a musician; and Fabiola Balestriere (The Rite, Veleno) as Annalisa Magliocca, a younger Scianel who remains a captive of her abusive husband.
Gomorrah is Italy’s biggest international hit to date, running for five seasons from 2014 to 2021, per Deadline. The series was distributed to 190 countries, including the U.S. where it landed on HBO Max.
