HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming True Detective series, directed by Cary Fukunaga and written by Nic Pizzolatto.
True Detective tells the story of a murder investigation from the time the crime is committed in 1995 to when the case is reopened 17 years later, in 2012. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, the show focuses on both the case and the detectives themselves as their relationship evolves over time.
The 30-second trailer offers a grim first look at the series, setting the mood with bleak shots of the show’s Louisiana setting accompanied by the words, “Around here, darkness lives on both sides of the law.” A single shot of the detectives appears at the end.
True Detective also stars Michelle Monaghan, and is set to debut in early 2014. The teaser is available here.
