MATHEMATICAL! Adventure Time is back! Pendleton Ward, creator of Adventure Time has gifted fans with a new spin-off show titled Fionna and Cake, surrounding the two recurring gender-swapped characters from the original series. According to Collider, this project was first announced back in 2021, but there has been little to no word since. But the silence has been broken. On August 17, 2023, HBO released the official trailer for the series as well as a sneak peek!
Adventure Time was a huge success during its run from 2010-2018. Viewers grew up with the show as it piqued the interest of both young and old. Disguised as a colorful children’s cartoon, Adventure Time brought viewers on Finn (Jeremy Shada, Adventure Time, Julie and the Phantoms) and Jake’s (John DiMaggio, Adventure Time, Futurama) twisted journey through a post-apocalyptic world of Ooo. Our protagonists dealt with monsters, space royalty, and inter-dimensional crises. Among the 283 episodes, two of them were instant fan favorites. These were about Fionna and Cake, the gender-swapped versions of the original characters Finn and Jake. These episodes were the same type of adventures that were played throughout the show, but this time, every character’s gender was switched to the opposite. With the massive positive response from audiences, it’s no wonder that the Adventure Time magic is being kept alive by granting these two beloved characters their own show.
The official trailer brings us into the surprisingly mundane world of Fionna and Cake, as it opens with a slice-of-life depiction of Fionna’s day-to-day activities with her cat named Cake. Her world then gets flipped upside down after she makes a single wish. Fans were excited to witness the return of this ever-exciting multiverse with characters they know and love from the previous series.
The series will include voice actors Madeleine Martin (Adventure Time, JoJo’s Circus) as Fionna, Roz Ryan (Adventure Time, Hercules) as Cake, Tom Kenny as the Ice King, Andrew Rannels (Big Mouth, Boys in the Band), Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta), Kayleigh Mckee (One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen), Sean Rohani (Chip’n’Dale: Rescue Rangers), and many more familiar voices that fans will be happy to hear.
The show is set to premiere later this month. Watch the trailer here!
