Were you a fan of Netflix’s interactive film Bandersnatch? If so, you’ll be excited to learn that the social card game Exploding Kittens is coming to Netflix in the form of an interactive game and series, according to a Facebook post by artist and game designer ‘The Oatmeal.’ The creator of the game recently made the Netflix series announcement in the aforementioned post, along with more useful information regarding the impending series.
Exploding Kittens began as a popular card game that revolved around avoiding drawing the titular ‘exploding kitten’ card using all of the other cards in the deck. The game, gaining fans as a fun and accessible party game, becomes the next in the trend of ‘popular-game-to-streamable-series’ seeking to solidify its brand as a holistic entertainment property (see Angry Birds). The Oatmeal’s Exploding Kittens, however, stands on its own with its unique art style and brand of playful humor, seen at the end of their announcement in which they say: “I’m not sure I’ve ever been this excited [,]I might explode.”
There is already a star-studded cast list for the series with Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), Ally Maki (I Go To Japan), Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows), and Sasheer Zamata (Woke). In addition to revealing the cast members, The Oatmeal selected Mike Judge (King of the Hill) and Greg Daniels (The Office) as the series producers, and Shane Kosakowski (Archer) as a series co-writer.
The new programs remain in development, with the interactive game coming next month and the series being slated for next year.
