The return of FX’s darkly comedic crime drama Fargo has been much awaited, with the gap between Season 2 and 3 growing longer than the average wait between TV show cycles. But according to New York Post, the target premiere date has been set for mid-April.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Season 3 will take place in 2010, after both Season 1 (set in 2006) and Season 2 (set in 1979). Though no official Season 3 trailer has yet been released, it shouldn’t be far off.
Fargo (based on the 1996 film) is presented in an anthology television style, with new characters’ stories being told each season. Season 3 will bring about several new characters including a parking lot king, a new female cop, a pot-bellied parole officer, a writer, a scientist, and a few more. The casting for these new main roles has been completed, but also, Den of Geek reported that at least one familiar face from previous seasons will be returning to Fargo.
According to Movie Pilot, Hamish Linklater has been recently been cast as Larue Dollars, morally inflexible IRS agent. In addition, everyone’s favorite wizarding warewolf, David Thewlis (Remus Lupin of Harry Potter), will be joining the Fargo cast as V.M. Vargas; a mysterious capitalist with limited scruples, MXDWN reported in December.
Along with Linklater and Thewlis; Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jim Gaffigan, Fred Melamed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Karen Soni, Scoot McNairy, young Graham Verchere, and Caitlynne Medrek have all been confirmed in their roles. This may seem like quite an extensive lineup, but Season 3 will actually be much more intimate and less far-reaching in its story lines than Seasons 1 and 2, per New York Post. Season 3 will be tackling the divisive power of technology, and Den of Geek quoted FX president John Landgraf in saying that “Fargo will center on the ‘selfie-oriented culture'” and liked the idea of “setting up these pragmatic and humble people against the culture of narcissism.” Though it will also be nice just to hear our favorite Minnesota dialect again, eh?
