HBO has an update on the news of their hit show Euphoria and when season three will roll out to viewers. According to Deadline, the likelihood of its third season premiering next year has gone up, as the newest season is scheduled to enter production in January.
HBO announced Euphoria was receiving a third season back in February 2022 during the halfway point of the season two premiere via mxdwn. The second season premiered after two-year hiatus with “over 14 million people across all platforms [watching], which was more than double the freshman season (6.6 million viewers),” continued mxdwn’s coverage of season three’s renewal.
Deadline revealed that all principal cast members will return to star in season three. However, in August 2022, Barbie Ferreira (Nope, Unpregnant), who plays teenager Kat among the Euphoria clique, announced she would not be returning to season three after alleged differences with the show’s creator circulated online via mxdwn. Also not returning to season three is the late Angus Cloud (Your Lucky Day, Abigail), who starred as Fez among the Euphoria group. Mxdwn reported that Cloud passed away on July 31, 2023, due to an accidental overdose.
In August 2023, creator Sam Levinson (The Idol, Assassination Nation) revealed he had plans to set season three in a film noir style, “[Exploring through Rue] what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world,” as per mxdwn. Whether season three will follow through with the film noir style is unknown. However, Colman Domingo (Rustin, Fear the Walking Dead), who plays mentor figure Ali in Euphoria, commented that season three delays resulted from Levinson’s writing and rewriting of the scripts to reflect the current state of the world via mxdwn.
Max and HBO CEO Casey Bloys (Less Than Perfect) confirmed in January 2024 that Levinson was “in the thick of writing season three” in addition to putting out the now-canceled show The Idol, via mxdwn. Previously, Bloys revealed in November 2023 that season three was aiming to come out in 2025, according to mxdwn.
Actress Nika King (65, The Rebel Girls) also commented on the season’s delay during a comedy set, talking about the serious financial impacts it has caused her and that she is out of the loop about the season three premiere, covered mxdwn. When asked about the season’s postponement, Storm Reid (The Last of Us, A Wrinkle in Time), who plays Rue’s sister in the series, said she was “disappointed but not surprised,” hoping that the series will finish strongly via mxdwn.
It is a relief to fans, however, that the main cast is set to return for season three as cast scheduling conflicts have also caused production delays after many featured actors saw career successes, reports mxdwn. Star Jacob Elordi (Saltburn, Priscilla) commented that theories of time jump in season three would make sense considering so much time has passed since last filming for the show and that they are playing characters in high school, as per mxdwn.
Taking advantage of the season’s delays is actor Eric Dane (X Men: The Last Stand, Grey’s Anatomy), who plays Cal Jacobs in Euphoria. Dane will star in Prime Video’s upcoming thriller series, Countdown, via mxdwn.
