Adding to the recent trend of crime anthology series (with shows such as FX’s American Crime Story and ABC’s American Crime drawing in impressive ratings for both networks), Bravo is producing its own scripted crime drama and has just secured an impressive cast for the project. Deadline reported that Eric Bana has signed on in a lead role for Bravo’s upcoming crime series Dirty John.
Bana will play the titular character of John Meehan, a charming yet manipulative man who seduces Debra Newell (played by the show’s other lead, Connie Britton) into his web of lies. The series is based on the reports of journalist Christopher Goffard, the mind behind the popular crime podcast also titled Dirty John and a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times.
Dirty John is written by Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives, Rome), who is also serving as executive producer alongside Connie Britton. Bravo has already green-lit the project for two seasons.
The series is Eric Bana’s first American television series and marks Bravo’s move to secure its own compelling original drama series to compete with other leading cable networks.
