The official first teaser for EPIX’s Batman prequel, Pennyworth, has officially been released on social media. The series is set to follow the origin story of the Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth, who will be played by newcomer Jack Bannon — other roles of his include: 2014’s The Imitation Game, Fury, and 2012’s Endeavour.
The hour long drama’s first season, will consist of ten episodes total and will show “the early life of the character as he meets Bruce’s father Thomas Wayne in 1960s London.” Ben Aldridge, Paloma Faith, Jason Fleming, Ryan Fletcher, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, Emma Paetz and Polly Walker make up the supporting cast.
Back in early Feburary, series executive producer Bruno Heller commented that the show’s Alfred is: “a young man whose father was a butler, who also wanted him to be one” despite it being the last thing Alfred wanted to be. He also added that the series show revolves around “the discovery of [how] you have to serve someone somehow.”
Set in 1960s Britain, the show will be set in an alternate world that looks similarly to our own, with characters such as the Queen of England appearing as a fictional character during the show’s time period.
Exploration of “how the world was different back then and how the world will change” will greatly influence the upcoming series as well as the story’s world building. “Why does he serve Thomas Wayne the way he does? Why will he be a mentor to the greatest hero?” are important themes Alfred will grapple with as hinted by series’ director. Danny Cannon.
The American produced drama is based on characters published by DC Comics and created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Pennyworth is set to premiere on July 28, 2019 and is executive produced by Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon. Aside from rumors involving other production companies, Warner Horizon Television remains to be the sole production house involved in the series’ creation.
