Last night’s Emmys was truly an amazing sight. There were numerous amounts of nominees and one actor managed to walk away with not just one but two Emmy awards. Actor Matthew Rhys (Widow’s Bay, The Beast in Me) won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Limited series.
For those who don’t know, the Emmys is an award show that showcases all things Television from actors to writing to directing. During last night’s Emmys, Rhys was apart of the popular Apple TV show Widow’s Bay which received nineteen Emmy nominations and walked away with fourteen Emmy wins. Out of the fourteen Rhys won the first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in Comedy Series. According to Deadline, Rhys issued this statement after winning the award: “My apologies to the women who’ve had to stand again,” Rhys said as he opened his speech to a standing ovation. “Stephen [Root] is right: This [win] is purely because of the depraved and twisted mind of Katie Dippold, and her genius really does live in the recesses of her disturbed brain.”
Later on in the event, Rhys was awarded for a Lead Actor in A Limited Series called The Beast in Me. This came as a surprise to Rhys considering the nominees that he was up against. The nominees included Yahya Abdul-Mateen (By Any Means, Man on Fire), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building, It’s a Wonderful Life), Steve Carell (The Four Seasons, Rooster), and Jason Segel (Shrinking, Over Your Dead Body). Due to the rising success of Widow’s Bay it was renewed for a second season by Apple TV+.
