A new Emmys supreme was revealed at today’s Emmy nominations announcement in the Television Academy’s Wolf Theater. At 8:30 a.m. PT, TV Academy Chair Cris Abrego was joined by actors Brenda Song (Scandal, The Last Showgirl) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows, The Magicinas) to reveal the nominees in the lead acting and Outstanding Drama, Comedy, and Limited Series categories. Overall, Apple TV’s second season of Severance boasts the most nominations with 27, followed by HBO’s limited series, The Penguin, with 24. The comedy, The Studio, and the third season of The White Lotus tied with 23. HBO Max scored record high with 142 nominations, leading all other platforms.
Before transitioning into the main list, Song and Guillén reminded viewers that the nominees for Outstanding Talk Series and Reality Competition Program were announced earlier during the CBS Mornings telecast. The network self-congratulated itself for its nominees: Survivor, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Amazing Race.
In the Limited Series category, Netflix’s international hit, Adolescence, scored 13 nominations, including a lead acting nom for Stephen Graham (Bodies, untitled Apple TV+ crime series) and supporting nominations for Erin Doherty (The Crown, Firebrand), Ashley Walters (Top Boy, A Thousand Blows) and the young newcomer, Owen Cooper. They will face last year’s The Penguin, which scored noms for Deirdre O’Connell (The Better Sister, Tell Me Your Secrets), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin, Daredevil), and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror, The Resort).
In drama, Disney+’s epic final season of Andor scored a series nomination, one of its 14. Yet, none on the acting front. Those spaces were reserved for The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Fantastic Four: First Steps) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials), Severance’s Adam Scott (Madame Web, Parks and Recreation) and Britt Lower (High Maintenence, Man Seeking Woman), and The Pitt’s Noah Wyle (ER, The Librarians) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, Washington Black) for Hulu’s Paradise. Kathy Bates (Misery, The Waterboy) joins the crowded streaming space as the lone actor from a linear broadcast drama for CBS’s Matlock.
On the comedy side of things, Apple TV’s The Studio leads the space with 23 nominations, breaking Ted Lasso’s nomination record and earning Seth Rogen (Invincible, An American Pickle) lead actor, directing, and writing nominations for the breakout comedy. He is joined by Freaks and Geeks alum Jason Segel for Shrinking, Martin Short (Jungle 2 Jungle) for Only Murders in the Building, The Bear’s repeat offender, Jeremy Allen White (The Iron Claw), and Nobody Wants This’s Adam Brody (The OC). Brody’s screen mate Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, The Good Place) shares the lead actress category with previous winners Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Jean Smart (Frasier, Designing Women), The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri (Opus), and Uzo Aduba (In Treatment) for the now-canceled mystery comedy series, The Residence.
The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will broadcast live on Sunday, September 14, on CBS.
