Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Me Before You) is set to star in Peacock’s new 1970s espionage series PONIES. According to Deadline, the project will be co-created and co-written by Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me, The Addams Family 2) and David Iserson (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Angry Angel). In addition, Clarke and Fogel will also serve as executive producers for the upcoming series, alongside Jessica Rhodes (Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Finders Keepers), Katherin Bridle (Slow West, Widos) and Pacesetter Production’s VP, Alison Mo Massey (Spoiler Alert, Breaking In).
Although there is no official date for when the series will premiere, NBC reports that the show will be based on the tensions between the United States of America and the Soviet Union during the Cold War era. The official synopsis of the show can be found below:
“Moscow, 1977. Two ‘PONIES’ (‘persons of no interest’ in intelligence speak) work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. That is until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the pair become CIA operatives. Bea (Clarke) is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort, Twila, is a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless. Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.”
According to TheWrap, Clarke is best known for her role in Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen, receiving four Emmy nominations, as well as her roles in Marvel’s Secret Invasion and the Sundance award-winning The Pod Generation. Currently, Clarke is starring in Prime Video’s latest sci-fi hit, Criminal, alongside Charlie Hannam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) and Adria Arjona (Morbius, True Detective).
There is currently no word about who else will join Clarke in the PONIES cast.
