Netflix’s Daredevil has found their Elektra.
French actress, Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), will play the popular Marvel character in the upcoming second season of the show, according to the Marvel press release. Elektra is described as, “a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock’s past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle.”
In the Marvel comics, Elektra is a trained assassin and sometimes girlfriend of Matt Murdock (AKA Daredevil). She has been an ally and a villain. Fans speculated that her history with Matt was hinted at during season one of Daredevil during a flashback that talked about an old Greek girlfriend. In the comics, Elektra is the daughter of a Greek diplomat. Marvel’s press release confirms that she was referenced in season one.
“After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.”
This isn’t the first time Elektra has been brought to life on screen. Jennifer Garner played Elektra in the 2003 Daredevil movie and also starred in the spinoff Elektra, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Elodie Yung is the latest addition to the show and joins Jon Bernthal for the second season. Bernthal will play The Punisher, or Frank Castle, as we reported here.
Netflix will release all episodes of season two in 2016. When the show returns it will be with new showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, Elden Henson returns as Foggy Nelson, Rosario Dawson returns as Claire Temple, and Deborah Ann Woll comes back as Karen Page. Production of the second season has already started and the first set photos can be seen here.
Fans of the show will be able to purchase Daredevil merchandise from Mighty Fine and New Era this September from their local comic shops, according to a press release.
People looking for more of the Netflix and Marvel collaboration can look forward to Jessica Jones coming to Netflix later this year and starring Krysten Ritter. The show will also be set in New York City.
Season one of Daredevil can be watched in its entirety now on Netflix.
