According to The Hollywood Reporter, the emotional moments that happened in The Crown between Diana and Prince Charles in the fourth episode of the latest season were unrehearsed. Elizabeth Debicki (Widows, Tenet), the actress who plays Diana, told the magazine that “What people see is very raw,” in an interview. The sixth and final episode explored Diana heavily and even handled her death.
However, audiences have been questioning how The Crown would explore Diana’s death as well as her personal life since the show first began airing. Throughout the first four episodes, the story begins to explore Princess Diana and her relationship with Dodi Al-Fayed. However, the romance is put to an end when Mohamed Al-Fayed, Dodi’s father, lets his selfish wants and desires take over, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Debicki told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was really important for us to create that sense for the audience so that when they head into this pressure cooker of turmoil, you know that they’ve had this time together and they understand each other and care for each other,” when regarding the relationship.
Along with this relationship, the series also saw the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the form of private conversations. While these conversations did not take place in real life, Debicki told The Hollywood Reporter, “In this imaginary incarnation, they’re able to say what they never maybe were able to say, and I think that’s very real and accurate in grieving somebody.”
The actors also were able to recreate actual events that took place in real life, says The Hollywood Reporter. These events included Prince Charles flying to France so that he could identify Diana’s body, having to decide if he would publicly mourn with London, along other events to emphasize what happened in the real world.
