Deadline has reported that an adaptation of Glen Cook’s popular Garret P.I. series of books is in the works with Eliza Dushku pegged to star and produce. IM Global Television and David Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) are joining Dushku’s Boston Diva Productions in adapting the fantasy epic to television.
The novels follow the eponymous Black Company, a mercenary troop offering their swords to the highest bidder. Characters and storylines are notoriously gritty, with accounts of battles and controversies that follow The Company in the service of occasionally diabolic employers. One such menacing ruler is The Lady, a mighty sorceress who will be portrayed by Dushku.
Goyer, Kevin Turen (Birth of a Nation), and Dushku’s Boston Diva team of herself, Nate Dushku, and Amie Lourie will executive produce the series. Joining them is Silver Lining Entertainment’s Sam Maydew (Katt Williams: American Hustle).
In an age when several popular novel adaptations are absolutely raking in ratings, Cook’s novel has all the components one finds in its peers. Storylines are largely character driven with an emphasis on both protagonists and those who oppose them. The ten book series also has a vast amount of material to draw from, with stories taking place all throughout its expansive world.
IM Global Television President Mark Stern added his own take on what makes Cook’s novels special. “Glen Cook’s books turn the traditional fantasy adventure tropes on their ear with wry, dimensional characters and a modern sensibility. We’re excited to explore this intricate and exciting world for television with David and Kevin along with Eliza, Nate, Ami and Sam.” Added Dushku, “The Black Company is vast in scope yet remains fundamentally relevant through the morally ambiguous choices it presents at every turn. We are excited to bring Glen Cook’s classic story to life with Mark and David, luminaries in the cinematic pursuit of science fiction and epic fantasy, who will inevitably assemble poignant characters embroiled in jaw-dropping action.”
