In a time when so many popular television shows are being rebooted and revived, it’s no wonder fans have been pushing for their favorite series to make a comeback. With shows like Gilmore Girls, Twin Peaks, Will & Grace, and Roseanne all making recent comebacks, it seems like any show has the potential to create more episodes.
One show that continues to have a solid fan base years after its final episode aired is The CW’s Gossip Girl. The series ended in 2012 after being on the air for an impressive six seasons. What started off as a show about privileged high school students on the Upper East Side evolved into the characters lives as adults, all while their every move is documented by a popular gossip website.
While fans have been eagerly hoping that the show will come back, star Ed Westwick has so disheartening news. Westwick told Radio Times that he is not interested in participating in a reboot of the popular series. “That’s not gonna happen,” he said. “It’s such a strange thing to think about. It feels like we only just finished! And I haven’t done enough in between yet to feel like I could comfortably revisit it. And I did so much with that character – it’s played out, man. It’s done.” When asked if he would participate in a reboot of the series under the condition that Netflix paid him a gazillion dollars, he said, “I’ll do it then.”
Westwick’s character Chuck Bass was introduced on the show as the immediate bad guy, but as his relationship with Blair Waldorf (Making History‘s Leighton Meester) progressed, he eventually developed into a fan favorite character. Reflecting on his character’s significant character development, Westwick said, “I was the only character who got to do that – or maybe one of two – ’cause I know some of the other guys were a little frustrated with some of the storylines they got.”
While it doesn’t look like Westwick will be playing Chuck Bass anytime soon, there may still be hope for a revival without his character. Blake Lively, who played socialite Serena van der Woodsen, previously told Variety.com that she is not opposed to doing a reboot. When asked if she would ever consider one, she simply stated, “I don’t know. Why not?” She explained, “Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much.” She also said, “I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows — if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”
Gossip Girl also starred Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Kelly Rutherford, Matthew Settle, Jessica Szohr, and Kaylee DeFer.
