‘DuckTales’ Reboot Allegedly In Final Stages of Disney XD Run

Disney XD broadcast the second Christmas special to come from the DuckTales reboot on November 30, the last episode in the season with 2020 airdate, but season three may wind up being the show’s last, ComicBook.com reports. Collider associate editor Drew Taylor tweeted that Disney allegedly has no plans to renew the series for a fourth season.

Taylor’s tweet was met with skepticism by the DuckTales fandom, given the dearth of official confirmation from Disney reps. The writer’s own Collider piece cited memory he had of Disney XD delaying the promotional rollout for the final set of Gravity Falls episodes: “Remember when, right before the season [two] finale of Gravity Falls began to air, when Disney was like, ‘Oh, by the way, these are the last few episodes?’ Expect a similar announcement before the last batch of DuckTales episodes airs in 2021.” Per a contemporaneous Forbes report, the network waited until the very end of 2015 to announce that the hour-long Gravity Falls series finale would air on February 15, 2016.

A lack of fanfare surrounding the completion of an animated series is not uncommon. DuckTales‘s fellow Disney show Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, for instance, had the conclusive nature of its third season revealed via Disney Channel PR department tweet that arrived a mere month ahead of the hour-long premiere.

More recently, many fans of the Nickelodeon series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles caught wind of the fact that the batch of episodes set to air during the first week of August were the final installments in the series through tweet from key animator Aly El Din (Monkie Kid) on the day the episodes were broadcast.

Screenwriter Russ Carney (Fanboy & Chum Chum), who worked in the show’s writer’s room, claimed on his Twitter that the development team was only given six weeks to write a quartet of finale episodes.

Season three of DuckTales will resume in 2021, as reported by Laughing Place.
