Doug Jones is an actor who has flown under the radar for many years. You’ve probably seen a movie of his, but you might not be familiar with his name – or even his face. This is due in part because of the roles he takes on: known best for playing Abe Sapien in the Hellboy franchise, both the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labryinth, and the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Jones is renowned for playing non-human characters with heavy makeup and elaborate costuming.
This year, his name skyrocketed to everybody’s attention with his performance as the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-nominated film The Shape of Water. Now, following his big year in Hollywood, it appears Jones will be making a return to television after roles in series like The Strain and Star Trek: Discovery.
Variety has reported that Jones has joined the cast of the highly anticipated What We Do in the Shadows television series, a spin-off from Taika Waititi’s 2014 mockumentary about the lifestyle of vampires. Jones’ role in the series has not been released, so it is unclear if he will play a character that appears human or yet another fantastical creature as in his previous roles.
While cast members Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Harvey Guillen, and Natasia Demetriou were announced last month, FX has announced more cast additions along with Jones. Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), Jake McDorman (Limitless, Shameless), and Mark Proksch (Better Call Saul, The Office) have all joined the What We Do in the Shadows cast as well.
FX picked up the What We Do in the Shadows adaptation in January. Waititi will executive produce the series with his filmmaking partner Jemaine Clement, who worked on the original film as well. Clement will also write the series while Waititi will direct all of the episodes.
