Don Johnson (Book Club, The Other Woman) is the newest member of Ryan Murphy‘s (Glee, Nip/Tuck) cast for his upcoming ABC series Dr. Odyssey, according to Variety. He’s set to star alongside Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek, Fringe), and the series plans to launch in the fall. It originates with Ryan Murphy Television and 20th Television.
Variety claims that while the show’s plot and cast are being kept under wraps, insiders say the series is supposedly a medical procedural. It is scheduled to debut in the broadcast season of 2024–2025.
Johnson’s most well-known credits are from his lead parts in the police dramas Nash Bridges and Miami Vice. The former ran for five seasons on NBC between 1984 and 1989, while the latter ran for six seasons on CBS between 1996 and 2001. Due to his work on Miami Vice, he was awarded a Golden Globe. Johnson most recently starred in the Emmy-winning HBO series Watchmen and the NBC comedy series Kenan. His filmography includes the following: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, Tin Cup, Knives Out, and Brawl in Cell Block 99.
Variety reports that Joe Baken (I Am Michael, The Sea of Trees) and Jon Robin Baitz (Brothers & Sisters, Feud) are co-writing Dr. Odyssey with Murphy. Jackson is one of the executive producers along with the other three. Through Ryan Murphy Television, Murphy serves as executive producer.
Executive producers include Eric Paquette (Kinetic, The Silent Hour), Scott Robertson (The Andy Warhol Diaries, The Revenant), Eric Kovtun (The Watcher, American Crime Story), Alexis Martin Woodall (Pose, American Horror Story), and Nissa Diederich. Paris Barclay (NYPD Blue, Cold Case) will serve as executive producer and director. The studio where Murphy has a general deal is 20th Television.
Variety reports that this is Murphy’s most recent series order since he transferred his entire contract back to 20th Television from Netflix. He recently announced that he had set up the FX series Grotesquerie and that his ABC series 9-1-1 which had been moved from Fox, had debuted on March 14th. Additionally, Baitz and Baken have worked with Murphy on several occasions; their most recent project was Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.
According to Variety, they are developing Murphy’s legal drama on Hulu, which stars Kim Kardashian (Ocean 8, Keeping Up with the Kardashians), and Grotesquerie. In addition, he has the upcoming first installment of American Sports Story, which will center on Aaron Hernandez, and the American Horror Story franchise.
Johnson is represented by Laird & Sobel and CAA.
