The docuseries The New York Times Presents released dramatic teaser trailer for its upcoming episode Framing Britney Spears, via RollingStone. Coming to both the FX network and streaming platform Hulu on February 5, the documentary will focus in on the controversial conservatorship placed on Spears.
Defined by RollingStone, conservatorship is, “where a judge appoints a guardian to manage the financial and personal affairs for someone who is incapacitated or incapable of making those decisions soundly on their own.” Back in 2008 when Spears was at peak stardom, she suffered various public breakdowns which then led to her father, Jamie Spears, becoming appointed as her conservator.
Today at the age of 39, the pop star is still under her father’s control. Last year, following health issues, Mr. Spears had to step down as conservator and a licensed conservator replaced him. In August of 2020, Spears appeared in court opposing her father’s return to the position, but his conservatorship still remains with him controlling her estate and various financial affairs.
An ever expanding movement has risen called #FreeBritney, where growing number of faithful supporters and fans have begun protesting the conservatorship. There are various Twitter and Instagram accounts dedicated to the #FreeBritney movement along with several podcasts, including the Even the Rich podcast #FreeBritney: A Girl Named Lucky.”
This will all come under the spotlight in the upcoming episode Framing Britney Spears, the sixth episode in the first season of The New York Times Presents. Including detailed interviews with lawyers and those close to Spears, it will follow the evolution of the conservatorship along with the rise of the #FreeBritney movement. Chronicling the young pop star’s new found fame and ultimate public demise captured by a frenzied media, one person in the trailer proclaims, “How we treated her (Spears) was disgusting.” FX Documentaries tweeted a short description teasing the upcoming episode, writing: “Her phenomenal rise to superstardom. A disturbing and relentlessly documented fall. And now, an ensuing conservatorship battle.”
Framing Britney Spears will air at 10 p.m. E.T. on FX and be made available to stream on Hulu February 5.
